Summary of the guidelines:

Story Type:
Off Assignment publishes highly personal, voice-driven stories about places and travel. They do not want traditional vacation guides, spa reviews, or typical tourist recommendations. They want authentic, gritty, and vivid stories where your personality shines through.

General Submission Rules:

1. Submit full drafts only. Do not send pitches or ideas.

2. Originality is strict. Your essay must be entirely unpublished and completely written by you. They strictly forbid any AI-generated content.

3. Simultaneous submissions are okay. You can submit the same essay to other magazines at the same time, but you must withdraw it immediately if it gets accepted elsewhere.

4. Payment: They pay $500 per accepted essay, except for the shorter “Witching Hour” column, which pays $100.

What to Write (Submission Categories):

i. Letter to a Stranger (800–2000 words)
Write a personal letter to an unforgettable person you crossed paths with during your life or travels. It should avoid judgment and connect to bigger, universal life themes.
Requirement: Title it “To [Blank]” (e.g., “To the Lady at the Subway Turnstile”).

ii. No Equivalent (800–2000 words)
Focus on one specific “untranslatable” word from another language you learned on your travels. Explain the word and tell a story about how it connects to your personal experiences.

iii. Under the Influence (800–2000 words)
Write about how a specific piece of art, a book, or an artist shaped your experience while visiting a specific place.
Requirement: Title it “Reading/Listening to [Artist] in [Place].”

iv. What I Didn’t Say (1500–3000 words)
This is for the “story behind the story.” Write about the fascinating, off-script moments or behind-the-scenes experiences that happened while you were working on a different writing assignment.

v. Goodbye to That Place (1000–2500 words)
Write a narrative breakup letter or a fond farewell to a specific location you no longer belong to. It could be an old apartment, a past version of your hometown, or a city you briefly visited but never forgot.

vi. Witching Hour (300–800 words)
Write a short, highly descriptive snapshot of what a specific place feels like at an exact time of day or night. Capture the mood of that exact moment.
Requirement: Base your idea on the prompt, “X a.m./p.m. in Y place is ____.”
